6 weeks since Christmas? 5 weeks since New Year and week 5 of the Craft Pimp Year Long 52 in 13 Challenge! Where is the time going?
This past seven days have been 'interesting', finding me not quite as mobile as I had hoped due to the alien's eviction but determined to keep doing something, anything, or go stir crazy.
A chance conversation with someone about Kumihimo, Japanese braid making, had me thinking about my marudai, the round stool braids are made on, and a stash of gorgeous hand dyed silk threads that I had in my studio. Following doctor's orders to sit and not do too much I decided to dust my marudai off, get out my threads and see where this took me. Surprise surprise, I'd already started a braid - ooh, 10 years ago now, eek, so I started by finishing this
and then made a few more
To cut a long story short, I bought my silk threads from a silk weaver who sold me her loom ends so that the jewellery I then made for her to sell matched some of the scarves she had for sale. It worked for both of us. Beautiful threads, far nicer than many commercial silks on the market, but I sort of lost the plot with braiding (and a lot more) when I moved away from Dorset
and onto different things.
My week 5 creation will need to be component rather than finished article, perhaps if all goes well and I have lampwork pendants to suit, week 6 will see the finished article. Or perhaps not. I am undecided. What do you think? Sell the braid unfinished for other artists to use, or make them insto necklaces; they'd be rather lovely with large holed beads perhaps?
