About Me

My photo
North Somerset, United Kingdom
My parents were worried when I ran around with scissors – now I play with fire and (intentionally) break glass! Based in the beautiful South West of England, close to the sea and often the scene of beautiful sunsets, I am inspired by the countryside around. Working with sea glass collected from remote beaches, soda lime glass from Murano, Italy, Europe, USA and beyond, I create artisan beads, for use in my own jewellery or for you to enjoy in your own creations. But I couldn’t stop there; continuing the theme from round rods to flat sheets, mostly from the USA, I break large sheets of transparent, opaque, multi-coloured and dichroic glass into much smaller pieces to make a kiln-formed range of bright, colourful jewellery and home decoration. Each piece I make is individually designed around the shape, size and beauty of the materials and intended to be unique, wearable, usable and affordable. All my glass work is kiln annealed for strength and durability and designed to give pleasure for years to come.

Happy New Year - newly baked beads

Happy new year to friends and customers, past, present and future. I hope 2011 brings everything that you want or need.

Christmas didn't go as planned for us. We had planned a quiet one with just my mother in law for company, but she's elderly and unwell so stayed at home. The upside is that I had more 'me' time, the downside is that we spent more time making frequent trips to the Midlands to visit and make sure she was OK. We're hoping a second set of antibiotics will have her right as rain in no time.

So, I've had time to make some pretty new focal beads with my new bead press and sort through other sets of beads I'd made but not yet fired in my kiln. I've now got more organised and these are listed, initially, on Ebay. There are sets of beads and focals too for sale. More will follow in a day or two.

I also have some bundles of fabrics needing new homes. These will be listed in my Folksy and Etsy supplies shops over the next few days - I have reassessed what items I will be making this coming year so lots of fabrics will be needing new homes as bags are no longer on the list.

Still time before Christmas ....

It's freezing outside and the malls are crowded. It's impossible to park and there's never room in the coffee shop when you need a seat. Why bother putting yourself through all of this when you can shop from the comfort of your armchair, get coffee on demand and have your presents delivered to you within a couple of days, weather and postie permitting?

My latest offerings are .... click on the pics to go to the listings ... don't forget these are just a taster of what's on offer in my shops, there is a lot more to see!

More lampwork glass beads for sale

Now that fairs are over for this year, I have time to list a few more sets of beads for sale.

As usual, click on the pics to be taken to the listings. These are listed on Ebay, but there are others in my Etsy and Etsy supplies shops and in my Folksy supplies shop.

As always, as long as I know or can spot it from payments, I am happy to combine postage on items purchased from any of my shops bought on the same day. Any longer than that, let me know if you want me to hold off posting in case you buy more or win another auction.

Of course, there are still other lovely things in my shops - I have 5 for you to browse through, check out the links in the dropdown on the home page of my website. Don't forget, for those in the know my Etsy and Big Cartel shops have a discount code - read earlier blog posts for more details.

Last fair before Christmas ....

So, here we are again, the last fair before Christmas. This one, the Create Festive Fair at the Create Centre, Bristol, is one of the largest I attend; a mix of crafts, eco-products, charity stalls and all the other things the Create Centre stands for. Leave disinterested parties at the Bath Ales bar and wander around at your leisure to start or finish off your Christmas shopping. Usually (although last year bucked the trend) Friday evening is a more relaxed affair, mostly adults looking for that special gift; Saturday is usually family orientated and more crowded.

Worth popping in on your way home from work on Friday or before you hit the Mall or Cabot Circus on Saturday - after all you'll find something individual here, not just on my stall, and who wants to be seen wearing the same hat/scarf/present as half the neighbourhood when queuing at the supermarket checkouts? If you are not looking for cheap, mass produced, factory made, child laboured, sweat shop products then this is the place for you. And you will, in most cases, get to meet the person who made the item; you won't get that in M&S!

From 4pm - 9pm on Friday, 11am to 4pm on Saturday.

Spotlight on .................. velvet scarves in my Folksy shop

Just in time for the winter cold snap, there are lots of gorgeous hand made silk viscose velvet scarves in my Folksy shop. All ready for despatch to keep you warm and many in my silly sale.

All have been designed and created in my North Somerset studio by "yours truly".

Just the thing to keep out the winter chills with a bit of style, or as a gift for your family, your friends or even yourself.

Lots more scarves in my Etsy shop and Big Cartel shop too and both these shops have a discount code running at the moment - see my earlier post.

Despite the appalling weather we are having at the moment, I am still posting on most days so orders should be with you within a few days (UK) or a week or so (international).

My shops are now open again ...........

So do take a look at what's on offer. As mentioned in the previous post there is a 10% discount code for my Etsy and Big Cartel shops. Read the post below to get further info.

Shops will next close on Thursday next in readiness for my busiest and final craft fair of the season; so if you have your eye on something it could be a case of 'he who hesitates is lost' as this fair, at the Create Centre in Bristol (see my website for further details and a map) is usually one that needs me to raid the store cupboard for goodies. A lovely fair, I really enjoy this one and am really looking forward to it. Worth the trip if you are reasonably local, leave your disinterested partners listing to the band or at the Bath Ales bar downstairs and find me (hopefully) upstairs. I won't know my exact position until I get there but am hoping to be in my usual spot, the small end room on the right as you get to the top of the stairs (and ignoring the one-way system). Look for Blue Box Studio on the show plan, available from reception as you arrive.

It's nearly here! - with discounts

What's nearly here I hear you ask.

Christmas - I forget how many shopping days until Christmas, but if it helps you count it's on 25th December this year.

The Curzon craft fair - closer than Christmas but a great place to find presents (so do come and say hello to me!)

My shops shutting for the weekend whilst I take some of the beautiful things with me to the craft fair - they'll be closing this afternoon so that I can set up in readiness for the 10am start tomorrow but will be open by Monday morning.

For blog readers I have a discount code for you {{drum roll}} Etsy have finally got their act together and now we sellers can offer discounts in our shops by way of codes. I've always been able to do this in my Big Cartel shop. Folksy are yet to follow suit. So, here's a code for 10% off your purchases in my Big Cartel shop and in my textiles and jewellery Etsy shop and Etsy supplies shop (where my lampwork beads are offered for sale) - it includes everything including already reduced items, how's that for a bargain?! Please note: It doesn't apply in either of my Folksy shops, they don't yet accept codes.

Code: BBSCHRISTMAS10

Valid from now (whilst shops are open) until 24 December 2010 (all times are UK time)

You can use it more than once if you want to and if you buy from any of my shops at the same time I'll happily combine postage and packaging and refund any excess. But the discount still only applies to these 2 shops, and is deducted at source when you input your code into the 'code' box.

Discounts will not be applied retrospectively, if you forget to put the code in the box, or read this blog post after you've bought, then sorry, no discount.

New scarves will be added to my shops in the meantime, so do check them out.

This week we are in Clevedon - home from home!

This week we are at a local fair in the Oak Room, of the Curzon cinema, Clevedon. How lovely to be able to get home from a fair in 5 minutes! The Oak Room is not normally open, it was once a cafe and I think will once be a cafe in the future, but for now it is hired out for events such as this.

The fair is open 10am to 5pm on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th November. Entrance is £1.

As usual, my shops will close for the duration of the fair so if there is something you have your eye on, perhaps buy it now in case it sells over the weekend; with everything being a one off (except kits) there won't be another like it to be had.

If you are in the town come along and see us, the Curzon cinema is on Old Church Street, opposite the library (there's a map on my website) with parking in the nearby streets, Morrison's car park or public car parks nearby.

After this, only one more fair until my craft fair season ends for another year.

Hang on in there whilst chaos surrounds you!!

So just how long can I remain in 'my bed' whilst the bedding is being changed around me?

Why do they have to do it now, when I'm asleep?

If I hold on tight, will they get the hint and go away?

Do they really think dragging the duvet and sheet across the bed, turning the cover inside out, and shaking will move me?

[Rattle of biscuit bowl off stage]

Ah, food, now that I will get up for!

It's Saturday .... it's Portishead

Tomorrow, Blue Box Studio will be at the Somerset Hall in Portishead. We enjoy doing this fair, not least because it's not far from home and we don't need to get up before the lark has gone to bed to get there!

I'll be taking my handmade lampwork beads so a good opportunity for those who make to have a look and stock up to make gorgewous presents. As usual there will also be jewellery and accessories in sea glass and lampwork beads, silk & velvet scarves and my own range of shibori dyeing and devore texturing scarf kits - both of these are selling well and may sell out before Christmas so if you want one now's the time - we ran out last weekend at Ross on Wye!! I won't be making more kits before Christmas, they are very time consuming to make and with fairs to attend as well I haven't the spare time to order in all the components, blend the dyes, print the sheets and make up the packs.

Don't forget there is also 10% off in my Big Cartel shop during November. Click on the link or read earlier posts in my blog for more details. All my shops will close from this evening until Monday morning (UK time) whilst I am the fair, if you want anything quickly, order before my shops close and I'll post tomorrow morning.
